Having a home based business is not as unique as it used to be. What we mean that it is not unusual to know someone who has a home based business . You might even have a business of your own that you run in your home. What is still great today is having a successful home based business, and thousands of people all over the world are doing just that.
Running yourhome based business can be both good and bad. If you talk to someone who runs a successful online business out of their home they will concentrate on telling you all of the good things about it. On the opposite end of the spectrum a person who is trying to get their business going and are having problems will spend more time talking about all of the things that go wrong everyday.
So who is telling you the truth?
Any home based business that you start is going to have it’s ups and downs. When you first get started you will soon realize that there is not a lot of people knocking on your door looking for your product or services. It is going to take some marketing skills and a lot of effort on your part to let the world know you are in business.
I would go so far as to suggest that in the early days the person who is now successful might have spent 95% of their time promoting their home based business. If you were to analyze the unsuccessful home based business person they are probably spending considerably less time on promotion and more time on busy work.
Busy work is surfing the Internet, putting staples in the stapler, checking your email 15 times a day, going to the post office, dusting your home office, and so forth. Although little details do have to be paid attention to that can not and should not be your focus in the beginning.
You need a customer. Then you need another one and another. The only way to get your first customer is to make a sale. If your business is operated out of your home, but really takes place on the Internet you need traffic to a website.
If your home business is based on a service you provide such as carpet cleaning or plumbing, then the Internet can be a support tool, but most of your business will come from offline advertising such as local yellow pages or newspaper.
Word of mouth referrals is an important part of any successful business so it is important to do a good job for your customers and then ask them if you can use them as a reference. There is nothing more powerful for future business than a testimonial from a satisfied customer.
In summary we have looked at two types of home based businesses. One is successful because the pay attention to growing their business with advertising, doing a good job, and then asking for a referral. If you keep this attitude in your home business you can be one of the successful and happy ones.
