WordPress Upgrade Frustrations

Monday, August 18th, 2008 | WordPress Blog with 5 Comments

After putting it off for months I finally upgraded this WordPress blog to version 2.6.+ and what a trip it has been. If you have a WordPress blog prior to version 2.5 then hold on to your hats if you plan an upgrade! I wrote about all the cool features of version 2.6.+ on my other site here: Finally Time To Upgrade WordPress. After going through it I may delete that post!

Here is what you need to be aware of or do before upgrading WordPress if you are using a version prior to 2.5:

 1. Backup: Backup everything including the database and all files and I mean all the files. If you get frustrated with the upgrade you can just upload the backup WordPress files and downgrade.
 2. Plugins: Make a note of all the active plugins you are using. Write them down, take a screenshot anything just remember what plugins you were using so you can activate them again.
 3. Backup Categories: Write down your categories and their parent relationships if you use them. This is critical, none of my categories came back with the upgrade and I had to manually edit my database to get them back. I still haven’t figured out how to put subcategories in the proper parent category.
 4. Backup Widgets: If you can take a screenshot of your blog to note the locations of your sidebar widgets. Or you can view a cached version of your blog later. You will probably loose all your text widgets in the upgrade so you should open all your text widgets and copy them to a text file to rebuild the sidebar.
 5. Tags: If you are currently using Ultimate Tag Warrior you won’t be in WordPress version 2.5 .+. There is built-in tagging in WordPress now but the tags will be lost until you use the built-in import function for tags. It worked and they all came back and assigned them to the proper posts.
 6. Deactivate Plugins: If you are not using the Automatic Upgrade plugin make sure you deactivate all plugins before doing a manual upgrade.
 7. Upgrade Plugins: Make sure to upgrade all plugins before activating them. Activate only one plugin at a time and check the blogs status. If a plugin kills your blog then you will need to delete the offending plugin from your hosting account.

Good luck upgrading!

Viral Blog Traffic Generation

Sunday, April 20th, 2008 | Blog Traffic with 1 Comment

The viral aspects of blogging have made static website building almost obsolete. Getting traffic to a WordPress blog can be the easiest thing to do if you just know how to leverage the power of WordPress and use it to spread your links around the Internet.

In order to generate blog traffic you must first and foremost give something. With a blog that ‘giving’ is producing good useful content. Not something that has been copied from another site or PLR articles rewritten (guilty here I admit!). But content people want to read, content people are searching for and content that people can use.

So in this post am I going to give you all the answers? Well no because I admit to not have them all but I will tell you that, based on past experience, if you provide useful content that people want to read and share with their readers the traffic will come. This is just one small aspect of the bigger picture. What I am referring to is called link bait.

How do you generate link bait? First, as I said provide good content original content, and then start searching for more popular blogs using Google and other means to find blogs that are related to yours. Sign up for their feeds, hopefully with an email option sent to you when new posts are made. Then when a post is made on these blogs elaborate on a point this blogger made with a link provided within your post to the post you are writing about. If the other blogger likes it they will approve the trackback and will most likely appear on their post as a comment.

Now don’t do this on every post from only one blog but doing so on several blogs with a big following will do several things. It will get some direct traffic from people clicking your link in the comments section of the other blogs post. If your content is good people will sign up for your feed and may do the same to you. If the other blogger you linked to likes your content they may even reciprocate and link to your posts.

I have seen this in action on my WordPress Guides site. Where I will write basic guides to using WordPress, referencing other more popular blogs and before long my guides are linked to in their posts. I have even had the opportunity to be a guest blogger on a few of them.

Writing And Tagging A WordPress Blog Post

Friday, May 11th, 2007 | Search Engine Ranking, Social Bookmarking, Tag WordPress Post, WordPress Blog, WordPress Plugin with 1 Comment

Writing a WordPress Blog post is pretty straight forward. is the extra step to get more traffic, higher search engine listings and page rank.

To get started click Write on the main panel and the Write Post screen opens. Then follow these steps to write your post and tag it using the Ultimate Tag Warrior and Tagalize It WordPress plugins.

 • Fill in the title box of the new post.
 • Choose or create a category for your post on the right side under Categories.
 • You should have check marks in both boxes in the Discussion options panel.
 • Do not put a password in the Post Password panel! That will keep your post from displaying on your blog. Only those with the password will be able to read it!
 • Under Post Slug (optional) you can create a smaller URL address for your post in here. If you don’t create a Post Slug your post title will be the URL address. Without a Post Slug your post’s URL will look something like this: www.yourdomain.com/category-name/your-post-title/ Using a Post Slug will shorten the last part of the URL to what you create in the Post Slug box. Try to make it shorter but still relevent to the title of your post
 • Choose the Visual or Code tab to write your post. Clicking the Visual tab (default) will allow you to type in a “what you see is what you get” editor. The Code tab is for writing in code, you can use this to write or paste HTML or other code into your post.

The WordPress plugins Ultimate Tag Warrior and Tagalize It will play a big role in optimizing your posts and blog.

A tag is simply the term used for keywords in blogging and the above plugins help create and manage your tags as you write your posts.

If you are writing a post about work at home you would want to create a category for the tag work at home and tag it throughout your post. Shown below:
work at home
The plugins used in this instance do several things.

 • An optional feature will create a tag for all new categories added, if I set up your blog this will be activated.
 • The tag will become a hyperlink to the category tagged, optimizing your internal linking structure helping search engine ranking.
 • They will display your tags on the bottom of your post and can be easily carried into some social bookmarking sites.
 • They will embed keywords in the code of the post’s page helping SEO.

More tagging options can be used by the Tagalize It WordPress plugin to tag words that pings two popular blog directories Technorati and Ice Rocket. This will alert those sites that you have content about the tagged words. A pretty easy way to get the word out about your blog. Be sure to add your blog to the those two directories also.

To tag Technorati and Ice Rocket use the followin:
[Tag-Ice]Word or phrase for Ice Rocket[Tag-Ice]
Once you are done writing and tagging your post click Save and Continue Editing, scroll down to look over your post in the Post Preview box, make sure all your tags are properly formatted and closed and scroll back up to make any changes.

Update for version 2.2 – The preview box is not shown on the bottom of the write post screen but a view link is available on the top right side of the write post box, clicking it will preview your post in a new window.

You can add more tags as a comma seperated list directly below the post editor if you wish. Or look up more tag suggestions with the tags (keyword) suggestions tool.

Once you are happy with your post click Publish, if you have the WordPress Plugin Smart Update Pinger installed and activated it may take a few extra seconds for your post to publish while it pings your blog.

After your post is published click (View site) at the very top of the Dashboard. This next step is very important so be sure to click the title of your post to bring it up in its own page.

Using the WordPress plugins Gregarious and or Share This you should now start social bookmarking your post. Scroll down to the bottom of your post and click the green Share This icon. Click on as many of the sites this shows and start joining them.

If you have just the Gregarious plugin you will see a group of icons below your post. The same goes here, join as many as you can.

Now everytime you make a post be sure to click the post’s title to show it on its own page and click on the Gregarious and or Share This icons and start bookmarking your post.

This post was inspired by the Authority Black Book written by Jack Humphrey. If you are serious about your blog then you need to check out the Friday Traffic Report for free blog marketing and Web 2.0 promotion tactics.

You can find the same WordPress install service information and the form to fill out on this link here: WordPress Install Service http://www.wordpressmax.com/install-wordpress

WordPress Blog Installation

Have you tried to install WordPress on your own site with no luck? Too much geek speak about setting up a database, file permissions and FTP clients? Even if you did get all that right is it properly configured with all the right plugins to get the most out of it?

There are many reasons to host WordPress on your own site but if you have found this page chances are you already know that. Here is what you will get from using my service.

 • The latest stable version of WordPress installed on your site.
 • The best available plugins for making the most out of your new blog.
 • Search engine optimized from the start and plugins that optimize each new post.
 • Your choice of over 15 different themes and the ability to upload and install thousands for free right from within the dashboard.
 • The latest Web 2.0 features and social bookmarking plugins that can generate traffic almost immediately.
 • Personalized one-on-one service and real answers to your questions from me personally.
 • Instructions, some with video, to help you get started.
 • Instructions in plain, non-geek language to keep your blog in top shape.

Your new WordPress blog will be search engine optimized and have it’s own Google sitemap that automatically notifies Google when any new posts are made. It will also automatically ping all the top services so you will not need to not use any other services to ping your blog. You can also tag your posts for automatic links to some of the most popular blog directories.

Of course you can take the time to do all this yourself for free, and your hosting account may even offer automated WordPress installation from within the control panel. In fact installing WordPress isn’t really the hard part. The hard part is learning how to customize WordPress, configure and use it, and then choosing and configuring all the right plugins. This could take weeks if not longer to figure out.

All this will be done for you for only $34. Thats it only $34 I will setup your blog and send instructions how to finalize its configuration and use your new blog. If you require addition services, customization or personal instruction you will find the addition fees very reasonable.

Here is how it works:

Fill in all the information you can in the form below and I will then check your hosting account to make sure it is capable of running WordPress. If everything is ready you will then get a PayPal payment request before I get started.

Customizing a theme, adding a header, and other things like setting up your domain name on your hosting account are not part of this service. If you desire any special services or customization I can help but need to know up front. I will contact you after you submit your information below, please reply to that email with any addition services you may need at that time and I will be glad to help.

Here is what is needed to get started:

 • Blog Name – (You can change this at any time)
 • Tag Line Or Slogan - a relevant, catchy, descriptive phrase about your blog (you can change this at any time)
 • Directory To Install Blog- Example: www.yoursite.com/blog with blog being the install directory. This can be called anything you wish or can be installed as the main website. * Tip* A short keyword is often better than just calling it blog.
 • Web Host Admin Login URL – The URL address you go to log into your hosting account.
 • Web Host Username – The username to login to your hosting account.
 • Web Host Password – The password to login to your hosting account.
 • Submit this FTP information only if it is different than your web host information. If you don’t know what it is just skip this section.

 • FTP Server Name Address
 • FTP Username
 • FTP Password
