This question comes up very often on various online forums “How can I add a link or banner to my web site?” For those new to website promotion, looking at all that HTML code can be very confusing and overwhelming. This is a quick guide showing how to to edit an existing web page using the free wed editor Nvu.

First download Nvu here, and open the program. Then login to your hosting account open the file of the page you want to edit, copy the HTML code, open Notepad on your computer and paste the code into it. Save this text file as a backup somewhere on your computer.

Next go back to your hosting account create a new file and call it something similar to the page you are editing: if is the index.html file call it indexbackup.html or index071407.html (the date). paste the code into the new file and save it.

Nvu and other editors have different views, usually on the bottom left side, one is a WYSIWYG editor for creating and editing a web page in a visual mode. Another is a “Source” or “Code” editor for creating or editing the actual HTML code. SInce you copied HTML code you need to make sure you click the “Source” or “Code” tab, delete anything that is in there and paste in the HTML code. It is very important that you paste the source HTML code into the Source editor!

After you paste the HTML code into Nvu you can now click the Normal tab and see what looks like a regular website. Here is where you can make your changes and additions. Click the Preview tab to look at the changes in what would be a normal web browser view.

After making your changes click the Source tab again, copy all the HTML code, go back to your hosting account, open the page you are working on, select all the code in it, delete it and paste the new code from Nvu in. Save your file and marvel at your handy work!

    Jeff,

I love the video I was so afraid to atempt trying to make changes to my website. I looked at this video many many times before I decided to try, and I finally did it. I put a banner and some ads on my site that replaced my Adsense ads.

I have one thing to ask can you do a video showing us how to work on different pages on our sites? I really could use help with this.

Thanks for the worderful video I will be using it over and over again.

I was looking forward to learning from this video.

I tried three time to view it. It started but only went for a minute or two. Could it be my computer or is the
video worn out because of it being run so many times?

    Thank you for your answer.

Great video Jeff, since I have watched it I’ve been able to make changes to my PIPS website. Without your video I would never have had the courage to try any changes.

I do have a question for you and that is have you made any videos showing how to add articles to the pips website? If so where can I find them, and if not how or where can I get info on doing that?

    Thanks,
    Martha

Martha, Sorry I don’t have any for adding articles. You should ask your question on the Warrior/PIPs forum and I am sure you will get all the help you need.

    Hi Jeff,

I was watching your video, which Cynthia Minnaar recommended highly, and it stopped after 2 minutes! Maybe it has something to do with my computer, but if you can show me how to access the whole video, I would appreciate it greatly! Thanks!
